School- and Policy-Level Influences on Peer Social Dynamics including how school policies, teaching choices, and school structures influence peer network structures as well as rates of delinquent and aggressive behaviors. Peer Aggression and Bullying including the development of bullying behaviors, the relation between friendships and victimization, the relationships between bully-victim dyads, and the differences between physical, verbal, and relational aggression. Social Network Analysis and its application to adolescents’ friendships, especially using Simulation Investigation for Empirical Network Analysis (SIENA; Snijders, T.A.B., Steglich, C.E.G., & van de Bunt, G.G., 2009) to model network change.
Methodology Center Research Areas: social network analysis, dyadic data analysis

I am primarily involved in two large-scale research projects surrounding adolescents’ peer networks. First, I am working on the NIDA-funded PROSPER Peers project (Wayne Osgood, Ph.D., PI), a multi-wave investigation of adolescent peer networks and substance abuse across 26 communities in two states. In collaboration with Mark Feinberg, Ph.D., I am currently using this data to explore the impact of school transitions of social network structures and friendship stability. I am also actively involved with the Classroom Peer Ecologies Project (Scott Gest, Ph.D. & Phil Rodkin, Ph.D., PIs), a new project exploring the relation between teaching practices, student peer networks, and student adjustment in 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade classrooms in two states. I am currently working with Scott Gest, Ph.D. and Phil Rodkin, Ph.D. on a paper exploring friendship dynamics between bully-victim dyads in these classrooms, in addition to collecting additional waves of data and managing data entry and processing for this on-going project. I am additionally working on a series of papers exploring several aspects of bullying and peer victimization. First, I am using the SIENA modeling package to explore the relation between friendship and victimization over time using data from the Middle School Transitions Project (Scott Gest, Ph.D., PI). Second, I am exploring teachers’ attitudes towards different forms of bullying in a district with a comprehensive anti-bullying policy (including relational- and cyber-bullying) using both quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews collected as part of my Masters in Educational Theory and Policy.
