| Research Interests: |
My research involves the identification and implementation of cutting-edge methodologies necessary for modeling adolescent risk behavior. In particular, I am interested in identifying the mechanisms through which social contextual conditions influence adolescent substance use and abuse. For example, my research concerns how neighborhood processes, such as social cohesion and social disorganization, may interact with proximal factors, such as interpersonal relationships, to produce differential trajectories of risk for adolescents. A common theme throughout all of my work is how interactions of risk and protective factors across multiple levels of the ecology may inform prevention and intervention efforts designed to encourage healthy behaviors. Reflecting these interests, I recently submitted an application for a NIDA Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) to integrate a social epidemiologic approach to substance use and state-of-the-art statistical methods. The training is aimed at developing and testing a conceptual model that demonstrates how complex interactions among individual, peer, family, and community domains may influence adolescent substance abuse. The proposal centers on two areas: (1) social epidemiology theory and methods; and (2) expertise in two advanced statistical methods – mutilevel latent class analysis and multilevel modeling. My primary co-mentors for this proposal are Linda Collins and Mark Greenberg, both at Penn State University. The other mentors are Sandro Galea, David Hawkins, Wayne Osgood, and David Rindskopf. Methodology Center Research Areas: latent class analysis, latent transition analysis

| Current Projects and Collaborators: |
In addition to Methodology Center scientists, my current collaborators include several Penn State Prevention Research Center (PRC) scientists. I work with Mark Greenberg and Mark Feinberg on the PA Communities That Care (CTC) Statewide Evaluation to explore how risk and protective factors at multiple levels influence adolescent substance use. With these collaborators, I am a co-investigator on an R21 proposal to NIAAA. Our proposal uses a community epidemiology perspective to examine several untested assumptions in the move from risk-factor research with individuals to policy affecting community substance use prevention. For example, it is often assumed that Intervention and resource allocation should be based on the relative elevation of a community’s risk factors compared to national norms and that the associations between risk factors and ATOD use/abuse are roughly equivalent across communities. I am also a co-investigator with Mark Feinberg on an SBIR grant proposal that was submitted to NIDA. Our proposal aims to develop a multi-method, theory-based assessment of relevant community-level factors that will be useful for research and community assessment purposes. My other PRC collaborators include Celene Domotrovitch, with whom I am evaluating two school-based interventions that are designed to improve the school readiness of disadvantaged children. I have also recently joined a research team that is studying peer influence on substance use and other problem behaviors through a longitudinal investigation of adolescent friendship networks. This project is led by Wayne Osgood (Penn State Professor of Crime, Law, and Justice and Sociology ) and focuses on analyzing longitudinal data on friendship networks in an ongoing, large-scale prevention trial (the PROSPER project). My role is to assist in the preparation of several manuscripts that address two topics: (1) examining the variation in friendship network structures across schools and communities; and (2) examining whether the strength of network influences on adolescent substance use are moderated by various individual, family, and contextual factors. Finally, I have several collaborations with researchers outside of the Penn State community. I have a long-standing collaboration with Meg Gerrard, Professor of Psychiatry and Co-director of the Cancer Control Research Program at the Dartmouth Medical School and Rick Gibbons, research professor at Dartmouth College, Department of Psychological and Brain Science. The focus of this research is to integrate social psychological theories of health behavior with concepts of ecological risk. Another collaboration involves Zili Sloboda at the University of Akron , with whom I am the principal investigator on a PSU sub-contract for a recently submitted R01 proposal This proposal utilizes secondary data analysis of the Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Project Study (ASAPS) to examine two research questions: how risk and protective factors across multiple domains may account for different patterns of substance use progression, and how neighborhoods or communities influence these patterns of adolescent substance use. I also have recently begun working with Janice Raup Krieger, who is an assistant professor in the School of Communication at The Ohio State University. Our collaboration centers on understanding the links between social capital, place identification, and health disparities among residents of rural communities.
