M. P. P. The University of Chicago, 2003 (Public Policy)
M.A., The University of Chicago, 2003 (Social Work)

Teaching:
HD FS 239: Adolescent Development (Co-Instructor)
HDFS 440: Child and Family Policy (Teaching Assistant/Trainee)

Research Interests:
Parenting and Early Adolescent Substance Use and Delinquency: My program of work explores the role of parenting and parent-youth relationships in the etiology and prevention of substance use and delinquency and the design and implementation of family-based intervention programs for high risk youth and their families. Methodological interests include the use of latent class and latent transition analysis, structural equation modeling, and utilizing reports form multiple reporters to study the role of parenting in preventing youth risky behavior.

Methodology Center Research Areas: latent class analysis, latent transition analysis, structural equation modeling

Current Projects and Collaborators:
I am currently working on a series of papers that explore the role of parental monitoring and parental knowledge on early adolescent substance use and delinquency. In collaboration with Drs. Mark Greenberg and Mark Feinberg from The Prevention Research Center, I am investigating the link between parental knowledge and early adolescent risky behavior using a dyadic approach that utilizes reports from both mothers and youth. I am also working with Mark Greenberg and Linda Collins from the Methodology Center to apply latent class and latent transition models to the study of parental monitoring and youth risky behavior during middle school.

I work on the PROSPER project, a large-scale effectiveness trial of preventive interventions aimed to reduce adolescent substance use (PI’s: Mark Greenberg, Ph.D. and Richard Spoth, Ph.D., funded by NIDA grant #DA 013709). The PROSPER project studies the implementation, diffusion, and effectiveness of evidence based interventions that are implemented through local PROSPER teams (for more information see Spoth et al., 2004). Fourteen communities in two states have received the PROSPER model; 14 communities are in the control condition. I am currently collaborating with Drs. Mark Feinberg, Mark Greenberg, and other PROSPER colleagues to study factors associated with the sustainability of PROSPER preventive interventions and community coalitions.

In addition to my work on parenting, I am collaborating with other graduate students and faculty to investigate the role of school-related influences on early adolescent substance use and delinquency. Current work with Jenny Oelsner (at the University of Jena) and Dr. Mark Greenberg investigates factors that influence the development of school bonding over the middle school period, a key protective factor for adolescent risky behavior (Oelsner, Lippold, & Greenberg, under review; Lippold, Oelsner, & Greenberg, 2008). An additional paper is underway that explores the relationship between the timing of school transitions and adolescent risky behavior (Lippold, Powers, Feinberg, Greenberg & Syvertsen, in preparation).
