Xianming Tan, Ph.D.
Education:
Ph.D., Nankai University, China, 2005 (Statistics)
M.S., Huazhong University of Science & Technology, China, 1998 (Economics)
B.S., Beijing Normal University, China, 1995 (Probabilities and statistics)

Research Interests:
Intensive Longitudinal Data Analysis: including further development and implication of Functional Hierarchical Linear Model (FHLM)  to make it capable of incorporating time-varying effects, hidden sub-group structure, within subject correlations, and other important features of Intensive Longitudinal Data.

Normal Mixture Models and Switching Regression Model: including parametric estimation, implementation, and applications of these models.

Methodology Center Research Areas: intensive longitudinal data

Current Projects and Collaborators:
I work with Runze Li and Lisa Dierker of The Methodology Center on the development and application of intensive longitudinal data analysis.  I am interested in developing appropriate methodologies to more adequately explore the potentials of intensive longitudinal data for answering scientific questions, and developing easy-to-use software package to facilitate the applications of these methodologies.  Our application projects focus on smoking behaviors of different populations, for example, the smoking behaviors of fresh college students (UpTERN), and the smoking behavior of habitual smokers.

In addition, I occasionally collaborate with Jiahua Chen at the University of British Columbia.  Our work to date has focused on the parameter estimation of multivariate normal mixture models and its applications.
